Self Esteem: The Key to Happiness

Too many people in this world, especially women, care about what others think of them. They feel they can't be happy unless they have a lot of friends, a high-flying job or are in a relationship. The problem is, they don't know how to make themselves happy. Happiness comes from within. You won't be able to achieve it, at least not long-term, from the approval of other people.

Happiness and self-esteem are so inextricably linked that it’s almost impossible to have one without the other. It's a cliché, but you really do have to love yourself before anyone else will. It's no-one's responsibility to make you happy but yours.

Learn to like yourself as you are and not to measure your self-worth against money, objects, whether you have a 'thigh gap' or, most importantly of all, what other people think of you. Maybe by now you’re thinking, well, that’s easier said than done. You’re right, it is. But don’t you owe it to yourself to do whatever it takes?

Try these seven steps to self-esteem:

1. Repeat positive mantras every morning and practice positive thinking throughout the day. Banish negative thoughts as soon as they arrive.
2. Go to the library and take out some self-help books, or watch tutorials on YouTube.
3. Try meditation and/or self-hypnosis.
4. Take up a hobby - something you love - and try to do it every day.
5. Spend time alone. Once in a while, take some time out for yourself and just relax.
6. Start working towards one of your dreams or ambitions. Don’t allow anyone to talk you out of it. Set goals and stick to them.
7. Do something that scares you, whether that's striking up a conversation with a stranger or doing a parachute jump. The more times you conquer your fears, the more confidence you will have in yourself.

If you catch yourself worrying about what others might think of you, remember the well-known saying: Those who matter don't mind, and those who mind don't matter.
Once you have that positive attitude going for you, it will shine through in everything you do. You’ll attract more positive people into your life and have the confidence to get rid of the ones who don’t make you feel great about yourself. And you won’t feel the need to rely on anyone but YOU.
You’ll finally have that elusive power that’s like psychological gold-dust to humans…self-esteem!
